Eibsee mit Lugspitze

Dear Mr Shields,
Thank-you very much for the ‘capital listener’ it was most interesting and cheery to have an English magazine to read, I daresay you must be missing not having Helen and Dorothy at home but it is lovely to have them here and I’m very sorry they’re going home so soon. This is where we were on Wednesday and I think it is one of the lovliest places I know. Kindest Regards to yourself and Mrs Shields from Abby.

Eisenach

Do you remember this view on one of our many expiditions in the pine forest? It’s a pity you aren’t here now we miss the wee brown and the purple heather.
We are all very sorry that you couldn’t come to complete our merry little party.
From E. V. Kaneke.
Much English [???] E von Kirche [???] as the others of the party have not entirely used the space I generously left them there is room for very much love from Jane.

792. Eibsee mit Zugspitze 2964m

Dear 3,
Another view of the Eibsee where we were yesterday. That white bit at the far end is the hotel - the only one on the lake - and we had lunch there. The mountain on the right is the highest in Germany I think but we hadn’t enough time to go up in the pernicular as it would have taken more than two hours and we wanted to bathe in the lake. There is still a lot of snow about and the water was pretty cold but we enjoyed it tremendously. Miss Spence went on to Salzburg yesterday and if she’s not staying over next month will maybe travel back to London. Watch the news bulletin, and Herald especially first editions as she’s been sending home articles to Robins Miller etc.

Jagdschloss Moritzburg Nr 3. Fernansic von Osten

Dear Helen,
Mother and I are having the lovliest picnic in bathing costumes at another lake behind the castle and smelling marvellously of pine woods. The place is just latching [???] with dragonflies and they will keep sitting on us and rolling their eyes. I was in Berlin for a few days to fetch mother and what with sightseeing and interpreting and acting as a Cook’s guide here I haven’t had a minute to thank-you for your postcards or even write a letter home to poor lovely Daddy. We are going to have an orgy of music buying soon. [???] [???] so far only comes to 16-9 I think. I don’t know what the Bartocks costs but I’ll try for them. Debussy is about 11- a volume. Mendelsshon is dirt cheap unfortunately we have to go home on the 11th, I’m just dreading it. The opera opens tonight and we’ve bought a book of 12 tickets, being Scotch we’ll have to go every night during the week to use them up. With lots of love, Abby.

Mozart-Denkmal in Salzburg

I have had all my correspondence [???] so all is well here now.
It’s so exciting here now, I sat behind Duke and Duchess of Windsor at Fidellio last night and behind me was the Countess of Oxford. The peformance under Toscarini was beyond words beautiful. Today I have just heard a symphony concert Mozart under Rodzinski. [???] #4 was sumptuous. This afternoon [???]. I think I stay until the 29th or 30th, you will be gone by that time but tell Abby I shall stay possibly. D.K. two nights, love to you all B. S [B. Spence - Scotland’s premier violinist].

Burg der Frau Holle

Dear Mum, Isn’t this lovely, it’s just perfect country for wandering about in. We watched the fireworks last night from the balcony of the Prince’s sitting room (he doesn’t return from Berlin until tonight) and there were some marvellous rockets and some shot up little parachutes that floated a firework like a star which burned away keeping changing colour. They were lovely. My brown is beginning to wear away with having had very little sun for so long but today is warm and sunny and I think I can safely go down to the village without a coat and without the rain coming on again. I’m going now to collect my Reichsmarks from Berlin. The pc you forwarded was from Marion Martin so I sent her one the next day. I must send one to Ms Winchester [music teacher] and Ms Thompson too. Have I sent [???] [???] from home [???]

Eisenach, Die schone Wartburgstadt. Blick vom Scivalbennest auf den Wilheimsthaler See

This is the lovely kind of country I’m staying in and it’s all as beautiful as this, even though I still prefer Munich somehow. I think I’m getting more like father and I’m beginning to prefer town life. In Munich too you had such lovely parks in the town itself and the glorious country so easily within reach that you had town and country at hand whenever and whichever you wanted. It’s market day in Eisenach today and outside in the marketplace (I’m writing this in the po) the little stalls are all setup with stripey umbrellas and the picture is the one out of a story book and has to be seen to be believed. Frau von Kaneke was showing us some darling little books after the style of the story of Supo[???] and Ms Bunny and she’s going to take me to the shop in the town one day so that we can buy some. She has a sweet little one about wee children and I want the same one.

There was a letter from mum this morning and one from Dorothy which I’m replying to seperately, a letter there from being such an event in my life. This little lake lies along the side of the main road I go past it everytime I go into the town it has swans on it and little tin rowing boats with rather diminuitive oars, that’s a swan’s home in the middle of it and I think the erection the left is a bandstand. It’s very pretty and there are white seats all around. The water is [???] clean and you can see easily to the bottom. My address at Markt Bright Handels [???] Reals Schule, Marktbrite Main, Bayern, Deustchland and I’ll be there on the evening of the 19th.
